If you remove the yoke from among you,
the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,
if you offer your food to the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
then your light shall rise in the darkness
and your gloom be like the noonday.
Isaiah 58: 9-14, NRSV

Having given a stern message about the true meaning of fasting and repentance in yesterday’s reading, Isaiah now gives a much more positive message about the rewards to be gained. If the people recognise and help those in need and refrain from judgement, they will shine as lights in the darkness. They are promised God’s continual guidance, they will receive strength and they will be able to rebuild from the ruins of their city. In return for their generosity, God’s generosity and blessings will be far greater than they could have asked or imagined.

    • How might these words have affected those listening to them?
    • What is your experience of God’s generosity and blessing?

Reflect on and give thanks for all the ways in which God blesses your life.
