23 July 2022 Saint Bridget of Sweden, Patroness of Europe

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

From Galatians 2:19-20, NRSV

Today we honour St. Bridget of Sweden, one of the patron saints of Europe. At the age of ten, Bridget received a vision of Christ on the Cross in which Christ told her why he was treated like this. From then on, the Passion of Christ became the centre of her spiritual life. She was married for over twenty years and bore eight children. Throughout her marriage, Bridget was well known for her works of charity to the poor and needy. Following the death of her husband, Bridget gave up the comfort that a wealthy and well connected woman could have enjoyed to devote her life in service to others. Eventually she obtained authorisation to establish a new order – the Bridgettines. This involved much patience and perseverance with long residence in Rome where she challenged the abuses being committed in the name of the Church at that time as well as continuing her ministry to serve the poor. Bridget did not live to see the first monastery established in her name but her example has been remembered and emulated by successive generations of Bridgettine monks and nuns.

    • Why do you think that Bridget was chosen as one of the patron saints of Europe?
    • Who are the people who dedicate their lives to the service of the poor today?

Pray for the continent of Europe and especially for all victims of current war and natural disasters.
