Finally, brothers and sisters, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus that, as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God (as, in fact, you are doing), you should do so more and more.
From 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8, NRSV
In today’s reading, we hear Paul giving further encouragement to the Thessalonians. Although they had received only basic instruction in faith, they were already living the “life that God wants”. However, Paul also wanted them to know that they should always strive for even greater maturity as Christians. He went on to give some specific guidance on sexual morality. At this stage of the Roman Empire, sexual purity and chastity were not valued. Extra – marital sexual encounters were common and accepted. For example, it was common practice for a married man to keep a concubine whilst the role of his wife was to provide children and manage the household. Paul’s instruction would have challenged the prevailing culture since he explained that the body belonged to God and should only be used in holy and honourable ways. Paul’s instruction was not limited just to matters of sexual morality. In encouraging a life of holiness, he was reminding the Thessalonians that in every aspect of their lives, their purpose was to please God and not just themselves.
- What impact do you think Paul’s words had on the Thessalonians?
- Does Paul’s instruction on holiness apply to our own times?
Reflect on God’s call to holiness and what this means for your own life.
