So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.
Colossians 3:1-11, NRSV
Paul was aware of the false teachings to which the Colossians were being subjected and so wanted to remind them of some fundamentals of their lives as Christians. He speaks of the new life in Christ that is the consequence of their Baptism. Their lives are no longer limited to a concern with worldly matters since they have been “raised with Christ” and can now trust that Christ will take care of every aspect of their lives. Now they must focus their concerns on the things that “are above” and grow in confidence that their lives in Christ will enable them to shake off all evil and allow Christ to live through them.
- What do you suppose Paul meant by “things that are above” ?
- Does Paul’s message still hold good for Christians today?
Pray for the grace to be true to your own Baptism and to allow Christ to be present in all aspects of your life.
