For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face.
Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.
From 1 Corinthians 12: 31 – 13:13, NRSV

For many of us, as soon as we hear the words “if I have all the eloquence of humans and angels…”  we know where this reading is heading. It is often used as a reading at weddings but could be read at the start of every day to remind us of the power of love. It was hard to know which extract to choose but this one was chosen as it offers a some thoughts to take into the day and to ponder as we hear the rest. Love does amazing things in the world – whether it is the love of spouse – the love of a parent for child or child for parent – the love of a person devoting themselves to a profession or vocation… you will be able to think of even more. BUt Paul reminds us that this is only a fraction of the reality. We see things as in a mirror… or, in these days, video calls – reasonably clearly – but not really as good seeing things face to face.
We see the gesture or hear the words that speak of love but cannot appreciate the fullness of the heart that offers it. Not yet… but one day, we will.

    • How is the power of love Paul describes different from what the media present as love?
    • What will it be like to know fully the love of others – and for them to know the fullness of yours?

Ponder the acts and words of love you have offered – and how you may have felt frustrated that they did not convey the fullness of your love. Similarly, reflect on things you have received and how they may have been limited expressions of love. Then imagine what it will be like when you experience it all in all its fullness.
