For from the greatness and beauty of created things
comes a corresponding perception of their Creator.
From Wisdom 13:1-9, NRSV
For many people, gazing at the beauties and wonders of nature brings a greater appreciation of God as Creator. However, for others, the thought does not go beyond what they are seeing and experiencing. The writer of the Book of Wisdom questions the inability of some to see beyond natural forces to their Creator. He also criticises the worship of idols as a way of interpreting the power and beauty of nature. For the writer, appreciation of nature automatically passed beyond this to their Maker and he simply could not understand why this was not the same for everyone.
- What do you think enables some people to see beyond natural phenomena to their Creator whilst others do not ?
- When have you experienced a “wow moment” as something from the natural world has made you especially aware of God as Creator?
Make the most of the opportunities that present themselves today for you to reflect on and wonder at the beauty and power of the natural world.
