For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.
From Romans 3:21-30, NRSV
Paul was well aware that in writing to the Christians in Rome, his audience included those from both Jewish and gentile origin. Having previously chastised both groups for the ways in which their behaviour had been displeasing to God, he now emphasises that the gift of faith is freely offered to all. No-one – Jew or gentile – can earn this gift by his or her own merits. All that is required is to trust in God’s will to save as shown through the sacrificial love of Jesus on the Cross.
- Why do you suppose Paul emphasised faith above “works”?
- Is it important for faith to be shown through “works” or actions?
Reflect on the gift of faith you have received – how this came about and the difference it makes in your life.
