Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another; and indeed you do love all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, beloved, to do so more and more, to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we directed you,

From 1 Thessalonians 4:9-11, NRSV

Paul has been very impressed by what he has seen and heard about the developing church in Thessalonika. The fact that they showed their belief through their care for each other  was evidence for Paul that they had listened to God’s will as well as to his instruction. He now wanted them to extend their love and concern even more widely and generously to those outside of their own community. They were also to recognise the dignity and honour attained through their work. In the culture of Ancient Greece, physical labour was considered demeaning so Paul’s instruction would have made people think differently. They were also to focus on their own affairs rather than interfering or meddling in the lives of others. The Thessalonians were not going to be idle!

    • Why was it important for the Thessalonians to take on greater responsibility in their Christian living?
    • What are the needs of our own times that require “more and more” help?

Think about how you can apply Paul’s teaching to your own ongoing Christian development.
