Hoping against hope, he (Abraham) believed that he would become ‘the father of many nations’, according to what was said, ‘So numerous shall your descendants be.’

From Romans 4:13,16-18, NRSV

In today’s reading, Paul continues his reflection on the promise made to Abraham. Paul reiterates that this promise did not come to Abraham or his descendants because of the Jewish Law but rather through his faithfulness and trust in God. Although God’s promise had seemed improbable to a man of advancing years who had no children, Abraham did not lose hope and lived to see the beginning of the fulfilment of that promise. Paul also makes it clear that the promise made to Abraham – that he would become the father of many nations – was not just a promise for the Jews but for all who put their trust in God.

    • Why do you suppose that Abraham was able to “hope against hope”?
    • What is your experience of your hope and trust in God being “tested” and what helped at such times?

Pray for those who have lost hope and trust in God.
