Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word.
Hebrews 1:1-6, NRSV
Today we begin reading from the letter to the Hebrews. This letter was addressed to a Jewish community whose faith was threatened by the strong Jewish influence around them. The author of the letter wants to strengthen the Christian belief of the community and to help them to persevere in their faith. At the opening of the letter, the people are reminded of both Christ’s humanity and his Divinity. Christ is portrayed as the reflection of God’s glory. The people no longer have to rely only on hearing God’s through the prophets as their ancestors had. In the person of Christ they have someone who can directly intercede with God for them at all times. They no longer have to make sacrifices since Jesus offered himself once and for all. What they have now is the fulfilment of what God had begun through the Jewish law.
- How might these words have influenced a people still unsure whether to return to their Jewish roots?
- What do these words tell us about the relationship between God and his Son?
Reflect on how Jesus may be interceding for you, your family and friends today.
