But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.

Paul wanted to reassure these early Christians about what would happen to those who had died. Although he had already taught them of Christ’s victory over death, he seems to have sensed that they needed further explanation. Neither Paul nor the other apostles knew exactly when Jesus would fulfil his promise to return again, but he wanted the people to know that when this did happen, those already dead would not be forgotten. In fact, Paul says, that they will be the first to gathered up to meet the Lord.
