March 6 2022 First Sunday of Lent

When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: ‘A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous.

From Deuteronomy 26:4-10, NRSV

As we enter into the Lenten season, our first reading takes us to the early days of God’s relationship with his “Chosen People”. We hear Moses giving instructions about the words to be used as the priest accepted the offerings of the people. The words given by Moses for the priests to say recall the ways in which God accompanied the people during their time in the desert and of how God rescued them from slavery in Egypt and brought them to a land of their own. These words are an expression of faith and a reminder of God’s constant care of his people.

    • Why did Moses give instructions for this expression of faith to be heard regularly?
    • How do we recall God’s care for us in our own communities?

You may like to spend some time reflecting on and giving thanks for the ways in which God cares for you.
