So acknowledge today and take to heart that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. Keep his statutes and his commandments, which I am commanding you today for your own well-being and that of your descendants after you, so that you may long remain in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for all time.
From Deuteronomy 4:32- 40, NRSV
Today’s first reading speaks of the unfailing love of God for his people. The author celebrates the time when Israel came into existence and recalls their rescue from Egypt and the moment on Mount Sinai when God took this people to be his own. Despite the repeated failures of the Chosen People to abide by their covenant with God, they were never abandoned or forgotten. Time after time, they were forgiven and saved by God’s actions.
- Why do you think Moses reminded the people of the many times and ways in which God intervened to save them?
- Can you identify times in your own life when you have felt close to God?
Reflect on the opportunities you have to deepen your relationship with God.
