September 10 2023 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

So you, mortal, I have made a sentinel for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.
From Ezekiel 33:7-9 (NRSV)
In today’s First Reading, we hear of the duty imposed on the prophet Ezekiel to warn sinners to repent. Ezekiel is to be like a watchman on the city wall, warning others of approaching danger. Failure to issue a warning would make Ezekiel responsible for the death of others. This responsibility for the fate of others is something to which we are called as Christians. We may not feel comfortable at the idea of going around telling others their faults but perhaps there are times when we can offer words of healing and hope to those who want to repent of some wrongdoing. We may also have opportunities to speak out against unjust or dishonest actions in our workplaces or wider society. At the same time, we can try to be open to the voices of people who care for us when they can see that our words and actions are causing harm to ourselves or others.
- How do you suppose Ezekiel felt about the responsibility he was given by God?
- When have you felt called to warn others against sin – or been warned by others of your own sin?
Pray for the courage to accept your own responsibility as a prophet, and for the grace to receive God’s prophecy though others.
