Listen therefore, O kings, and understand;
learn, O judges of the ends of the earth.
Give ear, you that rule over multitudes,
and boast of many nations.
For your dominion was given you from the Lord,
and your sovereignty from the Most High;
he will search out your works and inquire into your plans.
From Wisdom 6:1-11, NRSV
Today’s words from the Book Of Wisdom are addressed directly to those in power. The writer makes it very clear that any power that such people have is given to them by God and that they will be responsible to God for how they use or abuse their power. If they do not exercise their power honestly and fairly, they must expect “severe judgement”. They are not to expect the same mercy that might be given to the “lowly”. After giving these strict warnings, the writer tells his audience how they can learn to achieve wisdom – they have to listen to the words of advice they are being given.
- Why does the writer hold the powerful to greater account than the “lowly”?
- What do you think makes a good leader or ruler?
Pray for those in positions of power and authority that they may show wisdom in their judgements.
