I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable.
From Deuteronomy 18: 15-20, NRSV

The book of Deuteronomy is presented as Moses’ final words to the people of Israel before they entered the Promised Land. Knowing that he would die before this happened, Moses wanted the people to think about the choice that faced them in the appointment of a new leader. Moses was aware that once he was gone, the people would be influenced by other voices and so he reminded them of God’s promise to raise up another leader like himself. Moses wanted to ensure that his people did not listen to voices that could lead them into unfaithfulness to God but rather to listen to a prophet like himself who would speak the Word of God.

    • Why did Moses care about what would happen to the Chosen People after his death?
    • Who are the prophets of our own times?
  •  Reflect on the many voices that demand your attention and which you should prioritise.
