Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequalled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

From Deuteronomy 34:1-12, NRSV

In today’s reading we hear the sad story of the death and burial of Moses. Moses had climbed a mountain from where the Lord showed him all the expanse of land that had been promised to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants. Moses was also reminded that he would not cross into this land. Moses died and was laid to rest in a valley in the land of Moab in an unmarked grave. Whatever his failings, the summing up of Moses’ life at the end of this reading pays a fitting tribute to his calling and his mission. Moses was indeed unequalled for all that he did in the Lord’s name and as the person who had come closest to knowing God.

    • Why do you think Moses was allowed this glimpse of the Promised Land?
    • Why is Moses still remembered and honoured by Christians as well as Jews and members of other religions?

Pray for leaders in our church communities that they will be faithful to God’s will for the people they serve.
