So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.
From 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8, NRSV
At the beginning of this reading, we hear Paul referring to the opposition and rough treatment he had recently experienced. He had been flogged and imprisoned until an earthquake enabled his escape. Paul then goes on to defend himself against accusations of of trying to obtain money and praise from the people through the use of flattery. For Paul, these accusations would have been as hurtful as his physical wounds and he wants the people to know that it his real and genuine affection for the Thessalonians that have prompted his words and actions amongst them.
- Why do you think that Paul had been so unjustly accused?
- When have you faced unjust treatment – what helped you to cope?
Pray for those who are wrongly accused and punished for acts they have not committed.
