My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.
From James 1:1-11, NRSV
This letter of James was written to all Christians – by this time spread throughout the world. For James, faith was something that should be expressed in a believer’s actions and way of life. From the outset of his long letter, he acknowledges that trials will be a part of life and that for Christians, these should met differently from the ways in which they might be received by others. James instructs his readers to consider trials as a “joy” since they provide the opportunity for faith to be tested and thereby to become more mature and complete.
- How do you suppose this message was received by those who first heard it?
- What meaning does James’s message have for Christians today?
Pray for those you know who are experiencing trials of any kind today.
