The Lord God helps me;
therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like flint,
and I know that I shall not be put to shame;
   he who vindicates me is near.

Isaiah 50:5-9, (NRSV)

These words from today’s first reading come from one of the “Songs of the Suffering Servant” which form part of Isaiah’s prophecy. The experiences of the servant described by Isaiah correspond closely to those of Christ during his Passion. In describing the suffering and degrading treatment of the “servant”, Isaiah also makes clear the trust and certainty this servant has in the Lord. At every stage of his painful experience, the Lord is close to the servant and helps him to endure and ultimately to be vindicated.

    • Why do you suppose the “servant” had such trust in his Lord?
    • Is suffering an inevitable part of being a Christian?

Reflect on how you have been supported and upheld during times of suffering and give thanks for this.
