The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:6-11, NRSV
Paul again writes about giving to others. He emphasises the importance of the attitude that should accompany giving. Not only should Christians give generously to support others, but they should also be cheerful and willing in their giving. Paul reminds the Corinthians that this type of giving benefits the giver as well as the recipient. God, never outdone in generosity, rewards those who give cheerfully – both spiritually and materially.
- Why do you think Paul used the image of sowing seeds to make his point?
- What is your experience of feeling enriched through giving to others?
Be cheerful in your giving to others today e.g. in the practical tasks that help others.
