Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much wine, not greedy for money; they must hold fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them first be tested; then, if they prove themselves blameless, let them serve as deacons. Women likewise must be serious, not slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things.

From 1 Timothy 3:1-13, (NRSV)

As the early Church grew and spread, it became necessary to add layers of organisation such as the appointment of elders and deacons. In today’s reading, we hear Paul laying out the high expectations required of such people. Paul makes it clear that those to be appointed to positions of spiritual leadership should be those living what might be called “Godly” lives. They were not to be people who desired status or prestige but those who were able to be tested and willing to serve others.

    • What do you make of the qualities that Paul lays out for those to be appointed deacons or elders?
    • What are the qualities that make good leaders in our church communities?

Pray today for all in positions of leadership within our churches.
