21st November 2021 Christ the King

His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that shall not pass away,
and his kingship is one
that shall never be destroyed.
From Daniel 7:13-14 , NRSV
At the time when Daniel made this prophecy, the Jews were suffering great persecution at the hands of the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes. Daniel offered them a different vision of kingship. He speaks of the coming of one “like a son of man” whose sovereignty will not depend on human might but will be God given. This vision would have given them hope for a time when the tyranny to which they were being subjected would end and when God’s new and everlasting kingdom would be established. As many Christians celebrate today the Feast of Christ the King, we remember that Jesus himself often referred to himself using the words “son of man” and that his model of kingship was one of suffering and service.
- What difference does it make to know that God’s kingdom will be everlasting?
- What do you understand God’s kingdom to be?
Take the opportunities that are presented to you today to offer service to others – especially those who are vulnerable or marginalised.
