Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.
From Hebrews 13: 1-8, NRSV
As we approach the end of this letter, the author sets out some guidance on how to live as a community of faith. There is guidance on caring for others (especially prisoners) in times of distress, on fidelity in marriage and on loving people instead of money. The first piece of guidance forms the basis for all the others. The firm foundation for this Christian community is that they show love. This love is to be extended to their fellow believers but also to strangers. The reference to entertaining angels would have reminded the Hebrews of the story of Abraham and Sarah who provided hospitality to three strangers who turned out to be messengers from God (angels) bringing the message that Sarah would have a son in her old age. Their gift of hospitality was a blessing not only to their visitors but also to themselves.
- Is hospitality to strangers important in Christian life?
- What is your experience of giving or receiving hospitality?
Be gracious in receiving any hospitality offered to you and consider ways in which you can welcome others into your life.
