And we bring you the good news that what God promised to our ancestors he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm,
“You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.”

From Acts 13:26-33, NRSV

Today we hear a continuation of Paul’s first recorded sermon which took place in the synagogue in Antioch – part of the Roman province of Galatia. He continues to address his message both to the Jews and to the many who were drawn to Judaism but not full converts. These were communities steeped in the Scriptures and who had rejected the worship of Roman gods and of the Emperor.  Paul makes several, carefully chosen references to Scripture to show that Christ’s passion and death were pre-ordained and that the promises made to their ancestors were now fulfilled in Christ’s resurrection.

    • How do you suppose Paul expected his audience to react to his message?
    • How can we help others to hear and understand the “good news”?

“Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words.” This quote is popularly attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. As you go about your daily tasks today, consider how you can put this message into practice.
