But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their region. So they shook the dust off their feet in protest against them, and went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

From Acts 13:44-52, NRSV

The mission of Paul and Barnabas got off to a positive start at Antioch, but soon things took an unwelcome turn. The Jews were unhappy about the support they were attracting and tried to turn people against them. Although many had welcomed the message brought by Paul and Barnabas, they were forced to leave the region. However, as the final sentence of this reading shows, they were not deterred by their experience but filled with joy that they had brought good news to many.

  • How do you suppose Paul and Barnabas were able to hold on to joy in the midst of their difficulties?
  • What helps you to find joy in the midst of difficulties.

Reflect on and give thanks for all that brings you joy, and pray for those who do not feel joy or hope.
