30 November 2020 Saint Andrew, Apostle

The scripture says, ‘No one who believes in him will be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
Romans 10:9-18, NRSV

These words from Paul’s letter to the Romans would have resonated with Saint Andrew, whose feast we celebrate today. Unusually for the time and place of his birth he was given a Greek name which translates as ‘valour’ or ‘manly’. It is said that Andrew was actively involved in bringing gentiles to Christ. Andrew travelled widely to Asia Minor, Hungary, Russia, Poland and Greece in his mission to bring others to Christ. He is credited with founding the first Christian church in Byzantium. His reputation and popularity were such that after his death his relics were taken to other countries, including Scotland. Andrew was crucified in Greece under the order of the Roman emperor.

    • Why do you think Jesus called Andrew to be his disciple?
    • How are you involved in the mission of the Church?

Give thanks today for St. Andrew’s life and work, and for all whose missionary work today involves personal risk or danger.
