For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humiliation so that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself.
From Philippians 3:17-4:1, NRSV

Having experienced great joy and fulfilment in coming to know Christ, Paul wanted everyone to have this experience and he dedicated his life to spreading the message of the Gospel. His deep sadness that some rejected this message comes across very clearly. What also comes across is Paul’s desire to protect and encourage those who have embraced Christ as their Saviour. He wants them to realise that while they live in the world they are also preparing to be citizens of heaven. This will require them to live by values that will often be different from earthly values.

    • Why are “earthly things” often more appealing to people than “heavenly things”?
    • How can you prepare now for citizenship of heaven?

Pray for those who find their lives lacking in purpose or meaning.
