Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, and they spoke the word to no one except Jews. But among them were some men of Cyprus and Cyrene who, on coming to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists also, proclaiming the Lord Jesus. The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number became believers and turned to the Lord.

From Acts 11:19-26, NRSV

In today’s reading we hear further confirmation of the fact that the gospel message was intended for all people; Gentiles as well as Jews. Up to this point, the disciples of Jesus had mainly taken their message to the Jews. Due to the threat of persecution following the martyrdom of Stephen, it was necessary for the disciples to disperse beyond Jerusalem. Some had made their way to the great city of Antioch – one of the most influential cities of its time. Antioch was known as a centre of commerce, culture and business but also as a place of immorality. Some of the disciples were clearly more courageous than others and addressed their message to the Greek citizens of Antioch. Such was the power of their message that many people came to belief and the Church in Antioch grew into strong and influential community.

    • Why do you suppose the message of the disciples was so well received?
    • Where are there places today that need to hear the gospel message?

Pray for those who seek to minister in places where the message of the gospel may not be welcome.
