So in the present case, I (Gamaliel) tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone; because if this plan or this undertaking is of human origin, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them—in that case you may even be found fighting against God!’

From Acts 5:34-42, NRSV

In yesterday’s reading we heard that the teaching and actions of the apostles had so enraged the Sanhedrin that they wanted to put them to death. This intervention by the Pharisee Gamaliel prevented that course of action being taken. Gamaliel was listened to because of his wisdom and the respect in which he was held. He had a reputation for being one of the greatest teachers in the history of Judaism. Later, Saul of Tarsus was to come to Gamaliel for instruction. Gamaliel was able to quote instances of other revolutionary leaders whose movements soon disintegrated upon their death. His advice was taken but the Sanhedrin still authorised the flogging of the apostles as punishment. Far from acting as a deterrent, this punishment further strengthened the cause of the apostles and we are told that their proclamation of the Good News was never interrupted.

    • Why do you think the Sanhedrin took Gamaliel’s advice?
    • Have you ever benefitted from the wise teaching of others?

Give thanks for those whose wisdom has supported your faith and be prepared to share your own wisdom with others.
