Take care, brothers and sisters, that none of you may have an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today’, so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partners of Christ, if only we hold our first confidence firm to the end.
Hebrews 3:7-14, NRSV

Anyone who has ever watched or taken part in the London (or any other) Marathon race will know that for most of the participants, the support of the spectators and fellow runners makes all the difference as to whether or not they complete the course. With the encouragement, cajoling and even physical support of others, people are able to surmount huge physical and psychological obstacles to cross the finish line. Their achievement is often celebrated more enthusiastically than that of the elite athletes who will have finished long before them. The author of this letter to the Hebrews knew that there were some in the community who were falling behind and likely to drop out of the “race” of faith. They were struggling to stay committed to the new religion and not fall back into old and familiar. Here they are reminded to keep their eye on the prize of eternal rest in God’s kingdom. They are also instructed to give support  and encouragement to one another so that no-one is left behind.

    • Would these words have helped those falling behind in the “race” of faith
    • How has the encouragement and support of others helped you in your faith journey?

Is there anyone who needs your support in persevering through difficulties? Spend some time in prayer, asking for the discernment to see how best to offer this.
