Of this man’s (David’s) posterity God has brought to Israel a Saviour, Jesus, as he promised; before his coming John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was finishing his work, he said, “What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but one is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on his feet.”

From Acts 13:13-25, NRSV

These words come from Paul’s first recorded sermon which happened in the synagogue at Antioch, part of the Roman province of Galatia. Paul spoke of the history of the Chosen People, reminding his listeners – both Jews and proselytes(gentile converts to Judaism) of God’s care and constancy even in the face of their disobedience and inconstancy. Paul wanted his listeners to understand that Jesus was the culmination of this history – that everything that had happened in their history had led to this. As we know, some accepted what Paul said whilst others rejected and opposed his message.

    • How do you suppose Paul expected his words to be received?
    • Is it important to recall and remember the history of salvation?

You may like to reflect on God’s presence throughout history – including that of your own life.
