Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4: 12-16, NRSV

In the first part of this reading we are told that the word of God is sharper than any two edged sword which is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. This “sword” would expose everything about our thoughts and behaviour to judgement. Mercifully, the writer then tells us of another sort of judgement. This judgement is the judgement of Jesus who was tested in all the ways that we are as human beings. Because of this testing, the judgement of Jesus is compassionate. We need not be afraid of what needs to be laid bare. We can approach the judgement of Jesus in confidence because we will find healing and help with all the trials that we face.

    • Are both the types of judgement described in this reading important?
    • What is your experience of bringing your thoughts and actions to the judgement of Jesus ?

Pray today for those who feel that forgiveness and compassion are not available to them.
