15 May 2022 – 5th Sunday of Easter

When they arrived (in Antioch), they called the church together and related all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith for the Gentiles.

From Acts 14:21-27, NRSV

Paul and Barnabas had much to report from their missionary journeys to date. Their preaching had gained many new followers amongst both the Jewish and Gentile communities. They had re-visited some of the new communities to give them encouragement to persevere through hardships and had given them “new heart”. Paul and Barnabas had wisely realised that they could not be solely responsible for the support of these communities. They had followed the Jewish tradition of appointing elders in each community who could offer leadership and support.

    • Why do you think Paul and Barnabas used a practice (elders) from the Jewish tradition in the new Christian communities?
    • How do we identify and support the development of leaders in our own communities?

Pray today for those who are charged with the responsibility of supporting and encouraging others in faith. You may also like to consider how you are called to use your gifts in the support of your community.
