Taking his stand among them he said, “Are you such fools, O Israelites, as to condemn a daughter of Israel without examination and without learning the facts?”

From Daniel 13:41-62, NRSV

Today’s reading tells the intriguing tale of a crime committed by two elders against a Hebrew woman called Susanna. This beautiful young woman was falsely accused of sexual impropriety by these two elders when in fact they were the ones guilty of this charge as well as that of trying to blackmail her. However, a trial was held and the story told by the elders was believed even though Susanna was known to be a “God -fearing” and worthy young woman. Susanna was condemned to death and cried out for God’s help. At that moment a young man called Daniel interrupted to defend Susanna and to point out that the two men had not been properly questioned. When they were separately cross-examined it became clear that Susanna was innocent and her false accusers were subsequently put to death. Although many elders were present, it was the wisdom of a young man that ensured the life of an innocent woman was spared.

    • Why do you think Daniel’s wisdom was greater than that of his elders?
    • Do you know of any other examples of where God has given wisdom to the youngest of a group?

This story is well worth reading in its entirety.
