Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 12:1-10, NRSV

At the end of today’s reading, Paul presents us with the paradox of strength in weakness. Earlier in this reading, Paul revealed that he had undergone a deeply mystical experience earlier in his life but had not spoken of what was revealed to him. Unlike the so – called “super apostles” who were trying to undermine Paul’s ministry, Paul did not use this experience to draw attention to himself. He explained that he had been given a “thorn in the flesh” to stop him becoming too “elated” or self-important. There has been much speculation as to the nature of this thorn but Paul himself did not give any detail. It is enough for us to know that whatever form this affliction took, it kept Paul’s focus on Christ rather than on himself. When Paul prayed for this “thorn” to be removed, he received the assurance that God’s grace was sufficient for him and that power would be made perfect in weakness. Paul’s weaknesses made him entirely dependent on God’s grace and strength and thus more powerful than if he was reliant only on his own strength.

    • What sort of  strength came from Paul’s reliance on God?
    • What is your experience of growth through times of suffering or difficulty?

Reflect on any difficulties you may be experiencing and ask for the discernment to see how these could be occasions for spiritual growth.
