Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after I have gone, savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Some even from your own group will come distorting the truth in order to entice the disciples to follow them.

From Acts 20:28-38, NRSV

In today’s reading we hear the conclusion of Paul’s farewell speech to the elders of the church at Ephesus. Paul was very aware of opposition to the church both from those outside of it but also from those who claimed to be disciples. His authority as an apostle and his teaching were often challenged and questioned. Paul wanted the elders of the church to share this awareness and to be on their guard against attacks. Paul warned these elders of the strength and vigilance they would need to resist these attacks. Like him, they would need to be hard-working and prepared to put the needs of others before their own. They were to be as shepherds – constantly watchful, protective and tending to their flock.

    • How did Paul prepare the elders of the church in Ephesus to succeed him?
    • What are the qualities needed by the leaders of our churches today?

Pray today for Christians who face attack for voicing their beliefs.
