In former generations this mystery (of Christ) was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow-heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

From Ephesians 3: 2-12, NRSV

Those hearing these words for the first time would probably have been very shocked. The Jews, as the descendants of the “Chosen People”, were used to being thought important and were an exclusive community. They had not ever reckoned on the Gentile Christians being considered as of equal status to themselves. Perhaps there is still something challenging about the idea that it is God’s will that all people should be saved. Living in what is sometimes called a “post-Christian” society, the challenge to make our communities welcoming, and inclusive has never been greater or more necessary.

    • Can you imagine the discussions that might have taken place between those hearing this letter?
    • What can we do to make our communities more welcoming to those who are “searching”?

Pray for the discernment to see where you might be able to reach out to someone exploring what the Christian faith is about.
