All wisdom is from the Lord,
and with him it remains for ever.
The sand of the sea, the drops of rain,
and the days of eternity—who can count them?
The height of heaven, the breadth of the earth,
the abyss, and wisdom—who can search them out?
Wisdom was created before all other things,
and prudent understanding from eternity.

From Ecclesiasticus 1:1-10, NRSV

Today’s first reading is a hymn of praise to Wisdom. The writer sees the beauty of Creation as something that gives us a small insight into the Wisdom of God. The writer personifies Wisdom as co-creator with God by whom all things were and are created. Wisdom is not separate from God but that part of God which creates.

    • How does Creation speak to us of God?
    • Why was Wisdom created before “all other things”?

Reflect on what we can learn of God through the created world – if possible, spend some time outdoors in appreciation of the wonders of our natural world.
