To these four young men God gave knowledge and skill in every aspect of literature and wisdom; Daniel also had insight into all visions and dreams.

From Daniel 1:1-6,8-20, NRSV

The four young men referred to in the reading were Israelite boys who had been brought into the service of King Nebuchadnezzar. Not content with taking wealth and treasures from Jerusalem, the king also took these four boys – chosen as the brightest and best of their nation. His intention was to make these Jewish boys abandon their religion and culture and serve him instead. They were to be given training and be well cared for. In fact, the king decreed that they should only eat and drink of the same food and drink prepared for him. Daniel, one of the boys, was anxious not to defile himself by eating the king’s food ands so persuaded the servant dealing with food to give him and his companions food that was acceptable to them. The king’s servant was worried that if the boys did not eat the food prescribed they would grow thin and that this would be apparent to the king. However, after a ten day trial, the four boys appeared healthier than those who had eaten from the royal table. Their faith in God’s providence had served these boys well and continued to do so. God blessed them not only with health but also with wisdom and intelligence.

    • What does this event tell us about God’s care for people?
    • How have you felt God’s care and presence during times of difficulty?

Spend some time reflecting on your own God given gifts and how you are called to use these.
