For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, because a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions under the first covenant. For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
From Hebrews 9:15,24-28, NRSV

The author continues reflecting on the sacrifice of Christ. He contrasts the work of the Jewish high priest in a holy place made by human hands with the work of Christ in a holy place not made with hands. He also speaks of the work of Christ, whose once-for-all time-sacrifice makes it possible for him to offer to bear the sins of all. This contrasts with the work of the high priest, who had to make sacrifices annually – both for himself and for the people. The writer wants his audience to know that Christ’s sacrifice brings in a new era in which everything is changed. Annual sacrifices and subjection to the Jewish Law will no longer be required. God’s people from now on will not be just the nation of Israel – now people from every nation under heaven will worship Christ and know salvation from their sins.
