And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb:
‘Great and amazing are your deeds,
Lord God the Almighty!
Apocalypse 15: 1-4, NRSV

In today’s reading from the Book of Apocalypse, we hear a canticle – or hymn – about salvation. This time, the salvation that is celebrated is not just that of the group who had remained steadfast throughout the time of tribulation, but for all nations. God is proclaimed not only as king of his people but as king of the nations. This canticle is sung by those redeemed by God standing on the shore of a sea. This reminds us of another group of people – the Israelites who escaped from Egypt at the crossing of the Red Sea. So this canticle is both the Song of Moses and of the Lamb – both celebrating God’s greatness and steadfastness.

    • What difference does it make to sing rather than speak praise of God?
    • What are the hymns or canticles that allow you to express your faith and trust in God?

Find the words of a hymn that you especially like to sing or listen to and let these words be your prayer today.
