One whose service is pleasing to the Lord will be accepted,
and his prayer will reach to the clouds.
From Ecclesiasticus 35:12-14, 16-19, NRSV

Ben Sira, the author of Ecclesiasticus, reminds his readers of the importance of sincerity in their relationship with God. He was aware of offerings and sacrifices that were traditionally made under the Jewish Law. Although he does not directly criticise these traditions, he does imply that they should be accompanied by generous care for the poor and others in need. For Ben Sira, prayer could only be sincere if it was rooted in loving service to others. He goes on to give the assurance that God will hear and respond to such prayer.

    • How do you think that people caught up with the traditions of the Jewish Law would have reacted to Ben Sira’s wisdom?
    • How relevant is this ancient wisdom for our own times?

You may wish to reflect on your own practice in supporting others in need, being open to promptings of where your service could be needed.
