In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders.

And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’

From 1 Peter 5:5-14

At first, Peter addresses his words about humility to the younger members of the community, but then realises the need to include everyone in his message. Peter wants everyone to know that humility is an important part of the relationship with God. In order to live in God’s grace, it is important to be ready to serve others and to lay aside our own plans and ideas. Peter assures his listeners that those who do this will in their turn be “exalted” by God.

  • Why do you suppose Peter highlighted the need for humility amongst the early Christian community?
  • Is humility still an important quality for Christians to possess?

Pray for the grace needed to live in service to others and to discern God’s will in your life.
