Hear the word of the Lord,See the source image
you rulers of Sodom!
Listen to the teaching of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!
Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your doings
from before my eyes;
cease to do evil,
   learn to do good;
seek justice,
rescue the oppressed,
defend the orphan,
plead for the widow.
From Isaiah 1:10, 16-20, NRSV

The names of Sodom and Gomorrah summon up images of the destruction by fire and brimstone of these cities as a consequence of their great wickedness. Isaiah is actually speaking to the leaders and people of Jerusalem whose behaviour has so displeased the Lord that he compares them to these most wicked cities. Whilst they have been observing the rituals of the law, they have not been acting justly or taking care of the vulnerable in their community. However, unlike the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, they can be redeemed. Isaiah goes on to explain that they must acknowledge their sinfulness, be cleansed and rethink their behaviour. They must learn to do good, act justly and care for those in most need. Isaiah makes their choice clear – if they persist in rebellion they will be destroyed but if they cease to do evil and learn to do good, they will be saved.

    • What impact do you think the comparison with Sodom and Gomorrah had on the leaders and people of Jerusalem?
    • Does God still intervene when his people stray from doing good?

Reflect on any plans you may have made for this Lent, giving thanks for what you have been able to do and renewing your commitment where needed.
