Thus says the Lord of hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of their great age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets. Thus says the Lord of hosts: Even though it seems impossible to the remnant of this people in these days, should it also seem impossible to me, says the Lord of hosts?

Zechariah 8:1-8, NRSV

Life for the “faithful remnant” of the Jewish people returning to Jerusalem after their time of exile was far from easy. They met with a certain amount of resistance from those who had come to dwell around Jerusalem during their absence. They also had to contend with a certain amount of disagreement between the various tribes and many found it difficult to remain faithful to the requirements of the Jewish Law. God clearly sees that they need some words of encouragement and comfort. They are given the joyful image of the regeneration of their city where the old will find comfort and rest and where the sound of children at play will fill the streets. Although they might not yet share this vision, God makes it clear that it is not impossible and will happen.

    • What feelings are evoked by God’s promise?
    • What is your experience of God bringing new life into situations where this had seemed impossible?

Look for opportunities today to offer a word or gesture of hope to someone who needs this. You may also wish to find out more about Saint Vincent de Paul (whose feast we celebrate today) in whose name comfort and relief has been brought to many people in need.
