The greater you are, the more you must humble yourself;
   so you will find favour in the sight of the Lord.
For great is the might of the Lord;
   but by the humble he is glorified.
Neither seek what is too difficult for you,
   nor investigate what is beyond your power.

From Ecclesiasticus 3:19-21,30-31 NRSV

Today we hear words of wisdom from one of the oldest books of the Bible. The author reminds us of the importance of humility; telling us that the “greater” a person is, the more humble he or she must be. The word ‘humility’ is sometimes interpreted in a negative way with the suggestion that a humble person is one who denies that they are of any worth or importance. Perhaps the author here means something different and sees the humble person as one who not only recognises and appreciates their own gifts but who is also open to and willing to receive the gifts of others.

    • Why do you think some people need to boast of their achievements?
    • Who are the humble people whose example has inspired you?

Give thanks today for all that God has accomplished through you – and try to be open to receiving the gifts of others.
