By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son, of whom he had been told, ‘It is through Isaac that descendants shall be named after you.’ He considered the fact that God is able even to raise someone from the dead—and figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.
From Hebrews 11: 1-2, 8-19, NRSV

This reading begins a new section of the letter to the Hebrews in which the faith of the ancestors of Israel is praised. Those listening to the long list of faithful patriarchs who put their trust in God could not have failed to be impressed. Abraham, the first of these historical figures, is particularly singled out for his faithfulness. The Hebrews are reminded of Abraham’s willingness to leave the comfort and security of his homeland and to go into the unknown. There is also a reminder of Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice his precious son, Isaac. Abraham’s trust in God was such that he was able to face the unthinkable. His joy when his son was spared was as great as if he was actually receiving him back to life. Abraham’s faith also resulted in his becoming the forefather of many descendants, including those to whom this letter was written, who were also blessed because of their link to Abraham.

    • Why does the writer of the letter to the Hebrews want these people to remember their heritage?
    • Which people stand out in your faith journey because of the example they gave you?

Recall the people who have passed faith on to you and give thanks for their example.
