I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us…

We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved.

From Romans 8:18-25, NRSV

In today’s reading, we hear Paul speak of the hope that is assured for all who are God’s children. Paul begins by acknowledging the reality of suffering – something that was only too present in his own life. However, Paul encourages his audience to consider that their present suffering will be as nothing compared to the glory that awaits them. The benefits that they will gain will far surpass anything they can imagine. Paul speaks of the coming of a glorious new creation – the renewal of the world – and encourages patient waiting for this. He wants them to live in a spirit of hope – not just when they are in times of crisis but at all times.

    • Why do you think Paul wanted the Roman Christians to hear these words?
    • What might you say to someone who questions the necessity of suffering in our world?

Pray for those who are suffering today and especially for those who are without hope.
