Truly, O people in Zion, inhabitants of Jerusalem, you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you. Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’

From Isaiah 30:19-21,23-26, NRSV

The people of Jerusalem to whom Isaiah was speaking, were at that time under serious threat from the mighty Assyrian army. The rest of Judah had already been invaded and overcome with Jerusalem left isolated and vulnerable. God wanted to help but the people had placed their trust in seeking alliance with Egypt rather than trusting in God. They had gone against the law that prohibited alliances with heathen nations. So, before God could help, the people would need to eat “the bread of adversity”. Isaiah goes on to describe the peace and plenty that will come to them, but first they need to convert and repent.

    • Why do you suppose that the inhabitants of Jerusalem put their trust in making an alliance with Egypt rather than trusting in God?
    • When have you found it difficult to maintain your trust in God?

As we prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas, you may like to pray for an increased trust in God’s guidance in your life.
